International Journalism Festival 2010, Perugia, Italy

From the festival’s director:

The annual *International Journalism Festival *in *Perugia, Italy*, is a leading worldly journalism event taking place in *April *this year.
It is an open invitation to listen to and network with the best of world journalism. The leitmotiv is one of informality and accessibility, designed to appeal to journalists, journalism students and those interested in the role of the media in society. Simultaneous translation into English and Italian is provided. The festival is open to the public *free of charge*.

The 2007 first edition was a modest affair, but by the 2009 third edition there were 80 different events in the 5-day programme, 220 speakers, more than 260 accredited journalists and almost 300 volunteers in attendance from all over the world. Aggregate festival audiences plus visitors to the photojournalism exhibitions totalled about 30,000 despite our promotion being exclusively online and through social networks due to budget constraints. The 2010 fourth edition will be the biggest and best yet.

Perugia is a strikingly beautiful hilltop town of Etruscan origin. It is the regional capital of Umbria, one of the finest parts of Italy. The festival venues are all historic buildings located in the pedestrianised town centre. So how about a spring break in Perugia to enjoy great food, architecture, landscape and journalism? Where else can you tuck into your spaghetti al tartufo nero with Seymour Hersh or Carl Bernstein sitting at the adjoining table?

/*Please encourage your students to visit our website and our social networks, or to contact us. If you wish, write about us in your newsletters or websites. */
/*Volunteers from all over the world are coming to experience this amazing event and incredible learning experience, with distinguished speakers and aspiring journalists from all over the world. */

The Environmental Film Festival at Yale is looking for films

Yale’s Environmental Film Festival will be held from April 5th to 11th this year, and they’re currently looking for films. From their director:

Hi folks, I’m director of the Environmental Film Festival at Yale (EFFY) this year, which will take place April 5-11 in New Haven. I’m reaching out to you in the hope that you may know of a film (feature, documentary, or short) released after Jan. 2009, that has been under the radar of some of the bigger festivals or is just about to be complete. EFFY showcases films that raise awareness of current environmental and social issues. The mission of the festival is to foster meaningful discourse and to incite social change and environmental stewardship throughout the Yale community and beyond. In light of our mission, screenings/events are free and open to the public. We will choose about a dozen feature-length films this year for competition, a shorts and student film program for competition, and a screening/workshop of one work-in-progress. Last year’s festival included presentations by James Gustave Speth and Jeffrey Sachs as well as the East Coast Premiere of CRUDE, the New England Premiere of EARTH DAYS, and a Special Advance Screening of Disneynature’s EARTH. With the deadline for submissions fast approaching (Feb. 1), please get in touch with me as soon as possible if you have a film, or know of a film, that would be a good fit. While we do not have an open call for films, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you if you know of a great film.
Many thanks, Chandra

Calling Student Entries for Sustainability Film Festival

2010 Student Sustainability Film Festival

Call for entries!

The Northwest Institute for Social Change is now encouraging and accepting entries from high school and college students across North America for its 2010 Student Sustainability Film Festival. We are inviting students to produce and submit short films about projects their communities and colleges have instigated to promote sustainability.

The films should be inspired by real-life events, issues or solutions.  For example, has your campus put up a wind turbine? Or, students could examine how and if their school is encouraging alternative modes of transportation, or could consider how their college’s food services has chosen to reduce waste.

Entries are due on Friday, May 14.

Students will be awarded cash prizes for top-ranked submissions, as determined by an esteemed board of noted judges and filmmakers, including Curt Ellis (producer of “King Corn”) and Matt Martin (editor for “No Impact Man”). Each winning film is awarded a $1000 cash prize.

All final selections will be screened at a public event in Portland, Oregon in late May 2010.

Complete rules and submission guidelines are available at: nwisc.com/programs/student_sustainability_film/

Formed in 2007, the Northwest Institute for Social Change is an educational non-profit based in Portland, Oregon.  We teach students and citizens about the interplay between media tools and public policy. For more information please visit:  MediaMakingChange.org
